If you have a child in Year 6, you MUST apply for a place at secondary school with by the deadline of 31 October 2023.
National decision day is Friday 1 March 2024.
In order to enhance your chances of securing a place for your child at one of your preferred schools your application must be lodged via the home authority for where you live, even if your preference[s] are not for schools in your area. For example applying for an East Sussex school when you live within the Brighton and Hove city boundary, it is essential you apply via Brighton and Hove. Applications are then passed between the local authorities using a secure electronic link.

The appeal deadline for children starting in the Secondary Phase in September 2024 (for Year 7) is Thursday 28th March 2024.
Appeals will be heard throughout May and June 2024.

Parents have within 25 school days of the date of a letter confirming the decision to refuse an application. Appeal Hearings to take place: in-year appeals must be heard within 30 school days of receipt.
Notification of the date, time and venue for the appeal hearing:
ESCC will send you notification confirming when your appeal will be heard by an independent appeal panel. ESCC will give you at least 10 school days written notice of the date of the hearing, unless you’ve agreed to a shorter notice period. The information should also confirm the deadline to parents to submit additional information.
Deadline for additional evidence to be submitted:
You should send ESCC all your evidence supporting your case when you make your appeal. However, you can send any additional evidence to ESCC up to 7 working days before the date of the hearing (not including the day of dispatch or the day of their hearing). You can send additional evidence after this deadline or bring extra items with you on the day of your hearing but the appeal panel may decide not to accept this late evidence. Submitting extra evidence late can sometimes lead to your hearing being adjourned, or even postponed to another day.
ESCC will normally send you a decision letter which sets out the reasons for the panel’s decision within five school days of your hearing; it can take longer at busy times.
